I tried flickering the whole screen but some pixels look black instead of looking grey.
I'm assuming they are pixels with different refresh rates....

I think dithering might be your only real option here. Not much to work with at 100x64 pixels, though.

Again, probably a timing issue. If you try to flash them at just the right speed, then it could potentially be always on or always off (if it was in sync with the updates).
