hard-coding binary constants

Post by mattallen37 »

I think I have previously mentioned my wish for binary constants to be supported. I would type them out (or make the NXT type them), like this:

#define 0b00000000 0x00
#define 0b00000001 0x01
#define 0b00000010 0x02
#define 0b00000011 0x03
#define 0b00000100 0x04
#define 0b00000101 0x05
#define 0b00000110 0x06
#define 0b00000111 0x07
#define 0b00001000 0x08
#define 0b00001001 0x09
#define 0b00001010 0x0A

but you can't start a macro with a number (like "0").

I don't need 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, or 7 bits supported, but 4 and 8 bits would be great (e.g. 0b1010 and 0b10010110). Edit: actually a parser would be better (so that it would support any number of bits)

Just so you know, there is not any support for binary literals in the C/C++ standard, from what I can gather via Google. C#, similarly, does not support binary literals. Java recently added support for binary literals in Java 7.

In spite of that, I'll have a look at adding support for binary literals in NXC.

Interesting, because out of all the languages I have tried it in, NXC is the only one that doesn't support it yet. I know it works in WinAVR C, PICAXE Basic, ROBOTC C/C++, Arduino C/C++ etc.

Thank you for considering it!

BTW, just for the fun of it, I made the NXT type out all of the 8-bit possibilities:

Code: Select all

It probably took me 10 minutes to write the program, and it takes the NXT about 31 seconds to type.

I was thinking about this recently as well. I found this link below to the Arduino firmware source which contains binary representations for all values 0 to 255.

That isn't "proper". It's supposed to be 0bnnnnnnnn instead of Bnnnnnnnn. Thanks for the link though.

I have already made changes to the compiler to support binary constants. Along with that I have made it so that BricxCC will treat .h files like .nxc files. I have also added the FLT_MAX constants to the header files, added support for exponential notation, added support for new DRAW options (clear eol, clear line), fixed string API function defects, and added TypeOf and FormatVal API functions.

I will upload a new test release later today, if all goes well.

I checked the C and C++ specifications a year ago about this and only base 8, 10 and 16 is supported. While it is supported in quite a few compilers (for example GCC), it is just a compiler extension. (And AFAIK, several microprocessor 'languages' uses GCC behind the scenes.)

Looking forward to a new test release. : )
