Web Hosting
I'm working on a html website right now, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with website hosting (where is mindboards.net hosted?) Anyone done it before?
I definitely don't want ads, and it should be pretty low price. Ideas?
thanks

Re: Web Hosting
MindBoards in hosted on SourceForge.net.
If you only want HTML hosting, you could try FreeWebs.com. They don't give you FTP access (you have to use a web based file manager) but you get a free .webs.com domain. (There is a trick to remove the ads...)
If you really want a free web host, http://free-webhosts.com has a good list.
Otherwise, GoDaddy.com has PHP and MySQL support (useful if you want to run WordPress or phpBB), but HTML and CSS pages are fine.
I would try for a host that has PHP, so you can add extra scripts to your site, like a search form or poll.

Re: Web Hosting
I use Hostgator.com and I'm very happy with them. I have three domains hosted there on the one account. It's about $8 per month or so for the plan I have.

Re: Web Hosting
Sorry to revive such an old topic, but I've the exact same question.
For the people here who have websites, I'd like to have my own. I'd like to be able to use my own HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, etc. I'd also like it to be about $5 a month. Maybe also use WordPress(.org) for a blog type thing. Any suggestions?

Re: Web Hosting
Don't go with wordpress.org if you want to use your own CSS and all that. You have to pay if you want access to that. There are some cheap Hostgator plans that would probably suit you. I used to run my site on wordpress and was quite restricted with what I could do with themes, plugins, etc.
http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml <-- the hatchling plan would be $5 after the 20% offer expires. I use the baby plan myself

Re: Web Hosting
wordpress.org is the guys developing the platform, wordpress.com is the one with the hosting service. And wordpress.com is simply expensive and changing the CSS is as far as you go there...mightor wrote:Don't go with wordpress.org if you want to use your own CSS and all that.
I don't know any hosting providers which have server-side JavaScript though...

Re: Web Hosting
I do use the Wordpress blogging framework on my site.
Surely there are better alternatives to server side languages than Javascript? The fact that you're not seeing many hosting companies that provide it, must mean something

Re: Web Hosting
Really? I thought that Javascript was the most widely used browser language. I've always heard it called the "De-facto language of the web" is this not true anymore?mightor wrote:I do use the Wordpress blogging framework on my site.

Re: Web Hosting
I've only ever heard of client-side Javascript, it's massively popular for that purpose. I would say PHP, Ruby and Perl would be big for server-side stuff.
Edit: and Java, of course.
