(2nd) poll: use or need for which firmware?

Discussion specific to NXT-G, NXC, NBC, RobotC, Lejos, and more.

NXC and NXT-G used by what kind of firmware exclusively or alternatively?

I need the enhanced firmware for NXT-G and don't use the std firmware for this

ps:
matt, and notice that some things will be impossible to have with a Lego-compatible fw: e.g.,
a stack, a heap, pointers, recursions, a stdio.h and a stdlib.h and ANSI C compatible functions ...
maybe even function overloading which is admittedly more like C++.

Unfortunately that is true... that's why I would like another EFW (that isn't backwards compatible with NXT-G).

yes, my words, but with the simplicity and of all of the power of NXC and Bricxcc!
Maybe our wish about ACD-C will come true one future day in a Galaxy far far away...?

It might help (me) if you reformatted the questions. I still have no clue what to vote. I use the enhance firmware for both NXT-G and NBC, but I don't really need to use it as far as I know.

well, need maybe really is a little misleading.
what I mean is:
I "need" the efw because it's more stabile than the std fw, and some bugs are fixed, and more functionality is possible, otherwise I often ran into runtime or compile errors.

some may say, they "need" the std fw for NXT-G because of limitations they have participating at any Lego competitions.

Some may say, they "need" both because they often have to switch from 1 platform to the other because of reasons of what kind ever and don't want to reload everytime a new one (accepting disadvantages of doing this).

I wanted to phrase the statements as little "suggestively" as possible, so I tried to use the same syntax and a similar choice of words.

Maybe one should write "I prefer to use" instead of "need", what do you think (I'm not an English native speaker, I'm not sure of the side effects of words; in German the word "brauchen" implicates both "nötigerweise brauchen" (need) and "gebrauchen" (use) and "haben wollen" (want to have, prefer to have). "Brauchen" (need) is not compellingly "urgently need".

What would be your choice of words?

(Its probably questionable and problematic to change the wordings afterwards (belated?) because of votings which already have been given and which might be falsified by doing this.)

But IIRC you now have better experience using the efw than having used the std fw before. So I would say, from my point of view, you now "need" (prefer to have) the efw for NXC.

Agree?

FU***** SH*T !

I added 2 more options, now all other ones (which actually completely have not been effected by this supplement at all) now are deleted though.

well, the last poll was

Code: Select all

I need the enhanced firmware for NXT-G and don't use the std firmware for this 0

I need the enhanced firmware for NXC and don't use the std firmware for this ..........................10

I need the enhanced firmware for NXT-G and need to use also the std firmware 1

I need the enhanced firmware for NXC and need to use also the std firmware 1

I need the std firmware for NXT-G and do not use the enhanced firmware for this 2

I need the std firmware for NXC and do not use the enhanced firmware for this 1

That's why we never modify polls on these forums.

If you tweak the questions, the counters are reset AFAIK.
This makes sure that if the original poster turns a poll like this:
Do you like kittens?
[ ] yes
[ ] no

into
Do you eat kittens?
[ ] yes
[ ] no

you don't look like a kitten-killer. Nobody likes being accused of eating kittens.

As a side effect of making them al look the same, they all look the same. I think the problem is that you are trying to cram 3 parameters in one question.
  • Which firmware do you use
  • Which languages do you use
  • Why
Anyway, I filled your poll now.
