I am not sure what skaky is, but no, a mousepad is not called a touch screen, but a touch screen does not have be LCD based :)

I can't think of any LCD/touch screen combos that are only 1/2L thick (Edit:, actually only 1/2L thick WITH the frame, so only about 1/3L thick for the glass). Also imagine all the programming/interfacing that would be required to run something like that. Another thing, the one side has a large lip to hold the glass (or whatever it is) in place. If you used a backlight, you would only light up the center of the glass.

Edit: Also the indent where the wires go from the glass to the plastic is only about 1 1/2L long, way to short to be an LCD, and there is no room for wires to connect to the other axis (the frame is too thin).

Well, I think by the very fact that nobody has gone through it in order to come back in time to tell us it's a wormhole generator (apart from Xander of course, but we all know he's a cyborg sent from the future anyway), we can rule that possibility out.

My best guess is a touch pad.

It's actually a 'E.H.T. Deterrent Pad': for smoken' mice and those small children who are determined to continue to fiddle with your NXT's whilst you're attempting to download that all important "Wormhole Stability Control" Software.

'E.H.T. Deterrent Pad' is what the majority of Touch Pads should be!
i.e. Connected to between 50,000 &150,000 Volts at around 10mA (Extra.High.Tension).

Could it be an RFID antenna?

RFID antennas don't require a pane of glass, and it looks to have one.

I didn't understand the dimensions, but you could fit an OLED screen (with touch capacitance) in an area where you couldn't fit an LCD+Backlight.

Also, a touchscreen device without the touchscreen is either called a touchpad or a PaperJamz. AKA, (multi)touch interface.

Nothing, void, or possibly even subroutine.
