Mindstorms 1.0 and Enhanced Firmware

Hi All,
I have a question:
Is the Enhanced Firmware compatible with the Mindstorms 1.0 (or 1.1) PC program?
I am using a Minstorms 1.0 set belonging to my employer for a programming course and currently writing a NXC program to program my robot.
So it would be nice to use the enhanced performance and enhanced capabilities of the enhanced firmware. But if it means that the NXT no longer works
with the original Mindstorms 1.0 program, this could cause nasty surprises for the following person using 'my' NXT kit.
