looks like, that I will rethink, upgrading the controller of my recent NXT. Better selling one of them now, and waiting for the new sd-card slot

This is really great news, was it anticipated? It is a total surprise for me.
I would have bet for a large tactile screen, but it does not appear to be the case.
Can't wait to try it!

It's a very nice platform, very hackable
It runs Linux, so you can pretty much make it do whatever you'd like.

Regarding the new EV3, I read it has an ARM9 processor. How does this compare in program
execution speed to the current NXT? E.G., can it run 4 tasks, monitoring sensors, at the speed
as the current NXT runs 2, i.e. monitoring 4 sensors at the same frequency as the NXT running
NXC, monitors 2? Thanks for any ideas.

It's a 'Raspberry Pi' that I can directly plug my LEGO Mindstorms NXT Sensors and add-on in too.
This time it appears LEGO has been thinking things through!
- Stronger and faster ARM9 robotic processor
- Embedded 16MB FLASH memory
- 64 MB RAM plus SD expansion slot
- LINUX operating system, released under open source
- USB 2.0 interface allows for WiFi connectivity
- 4 input ports: Connect up to 4 sensors at the same time, including your NXT sensors
- 4 output ports: Now you can power up to 4 motors (Either Large, Medium or NXT)
- Up to four intelligent bricks to be connected together
- Bluetooth ® v2.1
- iOS and Android compatible
And the new LEGO Mindstorms ‘EV3′ runs LINUX..
Yipee!!
Beware all 'Windows Addicts', you will soon see a proper O/S in action.

Program execution is much, much faster than the NXT, I can't give you any hard figures, though. I am sure more concrete data will appear in due time
