1.1 won't install on win7

unable to install nxt 1.1 on my windows 7 laptop. installs, then says "mindstormsnxt.exe has stopped working".

I have searched the internet exhaustively for a fix. tried changing the compatibility mode- no luck with xp or vista modes.

do i need the "fantom driver"?
or just nxt 2.0?
