no, it's not free of side effects (as I described before): I only was using RotationCount but also had issues with memory effects of RotateMotorPID!
The link was to the MotorControl program! The file ControllerCore.nxc has the PD controller inside. The relevant code starts at line 585.

Could you please show the side effects you mean in either the firmware sourcecode or in the code of RotateMotorPID?
