"The NXT and RCX systems can also work together, so if you could also get an NXT, you could have a really awesome setup. All those RCX items combined have MANY parts that would be very useful to have with an NXT."
Yeah, like Haydenstudios.

Should I sell my RCX to upgrade to NXT?
definitely: YES!
do it ASAP as long you will get money for the old stuff!
EXCEPT if you still may have a perfect working installation of Vision Command on your computer.

The NXT is superior to the RCX, however the R.I.S. 2.0 kit + Ultimate builders set (USB) is far superior to the NXT 2.0 kit from a Technic builder´s perspective. Both sets contains some basic models, however the R.I.S. 2.0 also have a set of advanced models (with incomplete building instructions which is a great idea) and the USB contains yet another 4 models. Especially the models in the UBS are great and the ones in the advanced section are decent. In comparison the only model which I find interesting in the NXT 2.0 kit is the Alpha Rex.
I haven't owned the other expansion sets though, so can't say much about them. Other than the Vision Command set I don't think they would be that interesting though.
While I like the NXT brick capabilities, I am a bit disappointed in pretty much everything else about that kit. I think the programming lessons are okay though, but I haven't given them much attention either. (It looked similar to how it was done in R.I.S. 2.0.)

I agree with al the good things said about the RCX. Some things are actually easier to build with the RCX than with the NXT. I haven't made a decent walking robot with the RCX yet, though.
