I built a rig that has the NXT motor 'squeeze' a dropper, immediately followed by a command to trigger the camera. Not overly happy with the pics, need to work on focus and lighting, but again it proves the concept.

Turns out the main contributor to the lag is the time it takes for the camera to raise the mirror before opening the shutter. To overcome this we need to shoot in a dark room with a multi-second or bulb exposure and trigger an external flash. I got this working last night, using a sound sensor to fire the flash when popping a balloon, but the photos were not worthy of uploading, needs more work.
