You could also try installing the LeJOS firmware on the NXT. That uses a really different firmware loader. If BricxCC and NXT-G fail, I kinda doubt that this will work either, but it's worth a try. :)

I recently had one NXT that was stuck clicking in Samba mode. As far as getting firmware onto that brick, nothing I did worked, and I did at least all of what has been discussed above.

Since the brick in question already had a dead screen (which was an older and separate problem) I returned it to LEGO and it was exchanged.

What circumstances did that one fail under?

According to the LEGO helpdesk, the error message is bluetooth related, and should not happen during an usb connection.
The problem started occurring during a bluetooth connection, so that kinda makes sense. After a reset the device should be snapped out of this bluetooth mode, so there is definitely something wrong with the brick.
I am now in contact with LEGO to get a replacement brick...

Thanks for all the good advice.

@matallen37: if they let me keep the old brick, I'd be glad to send it to you, if you pay for the expenses...

That is really interesting, I have never heard of that before. Well, hopefully you will be able to get a replacement.

And thanks, I would gladly pay shipping (just so long as you don't live too far away).
